Le Roi Daniels Kindergarten 2019-2020
March is going to be a busy month. Before Spring Break arrives we have lots going on including St. Patrick's Day and Student Lead Conferences. The kindergarten students are going to be asked to make a leprechaun trap to bring to school for a fun St. Patrick's Day activity next week. This is a great opportunity to be creative with your child and to help them make their ideas come to life. **Please see the Blog and Homework tabs as well as your child's homework folder this week for more information. **
Student Lead Conferences
Student lead conferences will also be coming up on Thursday March 19, 2020. This is a chance for parents and their children to see all of the amazing work that they have done so far in Kindergarten!
This is different than our last one on one parent teacher conference. This time, your child will be taking you through stations to show and share their learning with you. There will be several families in the classroom at one time for a block of time. One of the stations will be a check in with me to get a quick update on your child's progress and a chance to ask any questions you may have. If I need to have a one to one conference then I will be contacting you to book a time on Friday, March 20th between 8am-12pm.
Please make sure to book your time through your CBE account https://webapps.cbe.ab.ca/MyAccount/Account/LogOn as we want to make sure that there is time and space for everyone. You will receive an email from the main office when the site is open for parents to book times.
Uniforms
Our classes are continuing to work on earning their trees for the "Forest of Uniforms". Please be sure that your child wears their formal uniform on Mondays. Please ensure that the white formal shirt is a button up dress shirt, not the white golf shirt on Mondays and other formal uniform days. Also. girls can wear the pants, shirts and sweater instead of the dress but they must wear the tie. Please ensure that if the dress is being worn that it is worn with blue tights. There are no leggings allowed. Thank you!

100th Day of School Snack
Hello parents,
Our kindergarten students had a very busy day being 100 year olds. We were so impressed by all the costumes and creativity that we saw.
One of the activities we did today was a 100th day snack. The students practiced counting to 10 as they got 10 groups of 10 snacks including craisins, cheerios, yogurt covered raisins, cheese sticks, goldfish, white chocolate chips, corn chips, popcorn, pretzels and shreddies.
We were mindful of allergies but also asked the children to bring the snack home and check with parents before they eat it to make sure that it is okay.
We also had a birthday today in the AM class where the birthday girl brought a cake pop for each student. Some students may have part of that snack in their lunch kits as well if they didn't finish. If there were allergies then they were given an alternative snack instead.
Thanks and have a great day!

Character Program
New character packages. All character books and bags should be returned so that we can get ready for the new books to be sent home in following weeks. If you still have any, then please make sure to return them tomorrow.
Food Impact
We will be having special guests from a Calgary based company called Food Impact, coming on Tuesday, February 11th to do a special presentation and activity with our kindergarten students about healthy eating.
During the presentation, the children will learn about nutrition, healthy foods and why they are important. Following the presentation, the children will get to make and eat a healthy snack.
There is a pink form that came home on Friday (AM students) and will be coming home on Monday for PM students. Please be sure to fill out the form and return it with your child in their folder by Tuesday in order to help us accommodate any allergies or food restriction that your child may have.
Please see the BLOG WEEKLY INFORMATION AND EVENTS section for more information.

Valentine’s Day Celebrations
As part of our study of friendship and the virtue of caring, we will be having a celebration on Wednesday, February 12th. Students who would like to participate in sending valentines to one another are encouraged to bring them to school on this day. I have attached a class list for this purpose.
In order to make this a learning opportunity, please consider these ideas if your child will be sending valentines:
|
Morning students received a list of the names of students in our class and the afternoon class will receive it in their folders on Monday. If would like a digital copy of the list (or have a student in the afternoon class and would like the names prior to Monday) then please email me and I will send you a copy.
If you choose to send treats then please make sure that they are pre-portioned/packaged and any baked goods have a list of the ingredients included so that we can check for allergies. It will be a very busy day and may be very difficult to have enough time to pass out and eat cupcakes, large baked goods etc. therefore, small simple treats are best, healthy treats are even better!
As always, please email if you have any questions or concerns ([email protected])
Thanks,
Mrs. Ernst

Welcome back!
I hope that everyone had a wonderful winter break. It is definitely winter in Calgary now, so please be sure to send your child with lots of warm clothing to wear as they go between the school and buses or cars in the anticipated arctic temperatures that we have coming up!

Homework
A reminder that homework is collected and reviewed when your child attends school on Fridays or Early Dismissal Thursdays. On these days I send the pink/purple folders home but take the blue folder/duotang out so that I can look at them and put on stickers on over the weekend.
The homework is meant as a tool to help your child to review and practice concepts that they are learning in school, it is not used for assessment. It helps teach the children responsibility, reinforces skills and is reflected in their understanding and personal development in learning.
Please ensure that your child is completing their homework independently, along with your guidance so that they know what to do. Please don't draw the picture and get your child to colour, or do dot to dot at this stage. We are trying to encourage the children to do simple drawings at their skill level. These are young learners just beginning to develop their skills, I do not expect perfection! I try to encourage the children to try to draw at least 3 details and use 3-5 colours that make sense, in order to complete their drawings. I remind them that the more details and background they add, the more they can communicate about their idea. Please try to do the same as they complete their homework.
If you want to support your child to increase their drawing skills then you could draw a picture and have them try to copy it. You can also begin encouraging your child to sound out the word and write it. If it is too difficult then you can help them sound out the word and label the drawing. Remember that they haven't learned all the letters and sounds yet, so this may take time and that is okay!
If your child struggles with drawing then it can help if you go step by step to complete a guided drawing. There are many guided drawings online that you can find. Art For Kids Hub is a great resource full of lots of guided drawings (each video has an adult and child doing a drawing together step by step). If you are interested in trying some with your child then you can find information at https://www.youtube.com/user/ArtforKidsHub
Thank you for supporting your child with this part of the TLC program and their learning. It is wonderful seeing their progress and they are all doing a great job. I look forward to the next few months of seeing their continued learning and growth.

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly and budget friendly we are no longer sending home the poetry booklet. We will be reading the poem and doing word work with it in class and then posting it on-line. We would like you to continue reading it with your child.
Here is this week's poem for Room 10 students:

Mystery Box
With several short weeks, we have not yet begun the mystery box in an effort to catch up on everything else. We will start it this week on Monday.
This activity is to reinforce the letter of the week (both the name and sounds) that is being taught in class. Each child will have a turn to take the Mystery Box home and place ONE object inside that starts with the letter of the week.
The item that is placed inside the box can be an object (please no food) or a picture or drawing. When the box is returned to school the children will try to guess what is inside the box by asking questions. The box will be sent home in your child's backpack on Monday and it will need to be returned on Wednesday. I look forward to this fun learning opportunity with the students.

Book Bags
Our Kindergarten class received our library book bags today. It is a large white bag that says I love (a big red heart) books. Students will be transporting their library books to and from school in this bag for the rest of the year in order to keep their books safe from spills and messes that might happen in their backpack. Even if it is an accident, all damaged books will need to be paid for before your child can take out another book.
Please do not recycle or throw away this bag. Keep your child's book in the bag when they are not reading it.
Thank you

Hello,
Today was such a busy day trying to catch up from the days we weren't in school last week and this week. Unfortunately we did not have time for the morning class to do their poem today. I have all the red folders at school and will send them home on Thursday next week with 2 poems. I apologize for any inconvenience. If you want to read the poem with your child before next week, here is a copy:
Five Autumn Leaves
Five autumn leaves were hanging from a tree.
The first one said, “Soon we’ll be free!”
The second one said, “I’m falling to the ground!”
The third one said “I’ll fly into town!”
The fourth one said, “Let’s not wait!”
The fifth one said, “Isn’t fall great?”

Fall Exploration
This week we are beginning to talk about fall and are learning to be scientists by observing and drawing natural items found during this time of year.
The students have also started taking part in fall themed centre activities where they are practicing sorting and making patterns using fall shapes and images.
Ask your child to look for signs of fall. Ask them questions about what they see. What is changing? What is going to happen next?

Please make sure your child comes to school on Mondays wearing their formal uniform. This includes the green cardigan long sleeved sweater. Students must also be wearing a white dress shirt (dress shirts must have buttons that go all the way down the front of the shirt). They cannot wear a white golf shirt with their formal uniform.
As part of the uniform requirements students cannot wear navy blue leggings or stretch pants. The pants must be navy blue twill dress pants. They cannot be sweat pants or pants made out of stretchy material.
There have been some changes to the uniform from last year. This year students need to wear the green vest. They can no longer wear the blue vest. Snacks
Please take note that we have several students with severe nut allergies in our classroom. Please be vigilant when packing lunches and make sure no products with nuts are introduced to the classroom environment for the safety of all the students. We also advise students not to share their food during snack time.
Please note that families are welcome to send in a small treat on birthdays but they must be pre-portioned and come with a list of all ingredients. Teachers will not be able to cut up any treats or provide plates or cutlery to students.
We appreciate any treats you wish to bring in and share with the class for celebrations but please ensure that none of them contain nuts (this includes Nutella).
Thank you,
-Mrs Ernst

Hello,
Mrs. Subbiah and I have placed checklists in each child's backpack today with reminders for any items that are still missing. We have been working on routines this week and it makes it much easier for your child if they have all of their shoes, lunch-kits etc. as we practice.
We understand that some families are working on acquiring some of the missing items, so if I have already spoken to you then please continue to plan to do so as scheduled. Otherwise, please try to have all of the necessary items by next week if possible. If we made an error on the form then please disregard and accept our apologies.
Thanks for your support in ensuring that your child is ready and prepared with everything they need to be successful at Le Roi Daniels TLC. It is going to be a great year!
Thanks,
Mrs. Ernst

Teachers cannot be contacted directly by phone however the office can pass on a message to me quickly when needed. Otherwise you are welcome to leave a voicemail and I will contact you outside of school hours.

Library Book Exchange
Our class has their book exchange in the Learning Commons on Thursdays each week. They will get to select a book to bring home which will be returned on Thursday, the following week. They will need to return their book each week in order to take out a new one. Often our Kindergarten students get upset if they can't pick out a new book so please try and help them by reminding them to put their book in their backpack on Wednesday nights.
The students will be receiving a plastic library bag (that says "I love books" with a big red heart) that they will use for the ENTIRE YEAR. These bags will help protect books from damage. DO NOT throw them away or recycle them. Parents will be expected to cover the cost of any lost or damaged books.
Library books are a great way to share the love of reading with your child. Please try to read these books with your child and ask them questions such as "What was your favourite part?" "Where do you think this story takes place?" "What do you think will happen next?"
Happy reading!

Red Poetry Duotang
This folder will have the poem of the week inside. Please take time to read through the poem with your child over the weekend. This will introduce the kindergarten students to pre-reading skills. The children do not need to be able to read the poem independently. Parents you can read the poem to your child and have him/her echo read (repeat after you). The poetry duotang will be sent home on Thursdays and will need to be returned to school every Monday.
