Le Roi Daniels Kindergarten 2019-2020
Dear Parents of Le Roi Daniels kindergarten students: We wanted to thank you so much for your kind words and support over the past week. We are already missing all of our students so much and wish them all the best over Spring Break. We look forward to reconnecting with families after the break and ask that you please continue to watch your emails and our blog as we move forward after the break. Please remember, Spring break is a great time to have an adventure while reading a book, write an amazing story of the events you tackle on your break or create or play a fabulous board game as a family. If you missed the opportunity to collect personal shoes and items on March 18 (an email was sent out from the main office), please know that all items will remain here at the school until further notice and they are safe. No student work is being sent home at this time. Enjoy your time over the break and we will reconnect in April. Please watch the website for updates and check the blog for information. Please make note of the blog address change, effective for April 2020. You will still be able to access WEEBLY as we transition to Blogger over the next few weeks. https://leroidanielskindergarten.blogspot.com Have a wonderful break! - The Kindergarten Team

This afternoon, the government announced that all classes are cancelled immediately and indefinitely due to COVID-19.
Teachers and staff will be meeting tomorrow to begin discussing the plan going forward. We will keep you up date as we make decisions about how to best support our students through these uncertain times. As you all know, our Student Lead Conferences next week have been cancelled to keep our families healthy. The province has also just announced new measures to protect Alberta students.
Please keep up to date with the Calgary/Alberta News for the newest developments regarding COVID 19. We wish our families all the best during this challenging time. We will keep you up to date as we receive more information from the CBE. Holi Festival is being celebrated on Tuesday, March 10 by the Hindu community. It is a celebration that marks the beginning of Spring and is sometimes referred to as the festival of love, where everyone focuses on having positive relationships and giving up resentment towards others.
This message is one that we can all appreciate, respect and practice in our school community. To honor and respect this holiday and celebration, all students are invited to wear bright, spring, festive colours on Tuesday March 10th (Casual day) to welcome the Spring. If this is a holiday that is part of your family culture and celebrations, please email your teacher before 8am on Tuesday and we will have those specific students gather for a group photo to honor this holiday. Thank you for celebrating with us in our diverse community. Leprechaun Trap Homework Assignment We will be reading stories for Saint Patrick’s Day and talking about leprechauns and imagination over the next 2 weeks. Stories and legends about leprechauns have been passed down for generations. We are learning about story telling and are excited for the students to use their creativity to make a leprechaun trap for one of their upcoming homework assignments (see homework description for details). Please encourage your child to be creative and come up with a create idea that they can make, mostly independently. You are welcome to help your child but please do not do it for them. This is a great activity to practice creativity, cutting and gluing and other great fine motor skills. The children will get a chance to share their leprechaun traps and will be asked how they made the traps, which materials they used and how it would work to catch a leprechaun. Please be sure that all materials are securely attached to your child’s project and label it with their name. If you send a box or bag with the project then please label it as well (we will send them home after the students have shared them). If you would like more information about leprechauns then you can follow the link below: http://www.cbc.ca/kidscbc2/the-feed/the-legend-of-the-leprechaun Here are some examples of leprechaun traps made by previous students. Upcoming Important Dates:
March 6 AM KG March 13 PM KG March 19 NO KG – Student Led Conferences all Day for Kindergarten (Early Dismissal Grade1-3) March 20 PD DAY – NO SCHOOL March 23-27 Spring Break March 30 Classes Resume Student Led Conferences Thursday, March 19th-2020 On Thursday, March 19th, we will be having Student Led Conferences throughout the day. As there are no report cards going home at this time, this is a chance for your child/children to tour you around their school and classroom and show you the work and learning that they have done so far in Kindergarten. These conferences are meant for your child to share their learning with you, they are not designed for one to one conversations with the teacher. The online conference manager will be available March 9th at 8am until March 18th at midnight and you will have the opportunity to choose an hour time slot between 8am-12pm, 1pm-3pm and 4pm – 8pm on the 19th to come and see what your children have been doing. You do not need to stay the entire hour but it is your time along with other families to tour the classroom and take part in activities. There will be an opportunity for you to “check in” with the teacher during your visit but not for a private conversation. Parents will not have access to booking one to one conferences, however, if you need to discuss something specific with your child’s teacher privately, please contact them to arrange a time. Should your child’s teacher require a one to one conversation, they will contact you to arrange a time to come in on Friday March 20th between 8am-12pm or at another time that is convenient for you both. We look forward to having our students show you their great work and celebrate all they have learned at Le Roi Daniels School this year! Our kindergarten students had a very busy day celebrating the 100th day of Kindergarten. We were so impressed by all the costumes and creativity that we saw! We did a variety of activities including counting 10 groups of 10 to make 100, 100 exercises during Physical Education, stories and songs about 100 and a special 100th day snack (10 groups of 10 different snacks each). Pink Shirt Day Our students enjoyed taking part in Pink Shirt Day last week and discussing how to be kind and respectful to others.
Thank you to everyone who wore pink to show that we will not tolerate bullying and need to stand up for one another to help show that we care. A reminder that tomorrow, February 28th is AM (morning) kindergarten students.
Pink Shirt Day February 26th, 2019 Our school is taking part in Pink Shirt Day on Wednesday, Feb.26th. This is a national event to create awareness about bullying and teach students kindness and empathy. Students are encouraged to wear pink this day. If one clothing item is pink then the others can be your choice. If students do not have any pink then they are expected to wear their uniforms. Our afternoon class will be attending an assembly about Pink Shirt Day hosted by the grade one students at 1:30pm on this day. For more information about Pink Shirt Day see http://pinkshirtday.ca We have been talking about bigger numbers and getting the children to practice counting to 10 leading up to the 100th Day of School on Thursday February 27th 2020. On this day, we will be having a celebration in our classes for “100’s Day” and have sent home 100's Day activities for homework this week. To get in the spirit of 100’s Day we are asking that your child come to school on Thursday February 27th, dressed and looking as if they are 100 years old. Talk with them about what that may look like when they are 100 years old. For example grey hair, spectacles, grandma/grandpa type clothing, wrinkles, a cane etc. Use your imagination. If you search "100th Day of School costume ideas online, there are lots of examples to give you some ideas. *** 100’s Day Project*** As an at home assignment we are asking you to work with your child on a student/parent project that shows 100 of something in a clear plastic bottle. The project should include 100 countable pieces. Please make sure that the bottle is well sealed and labelled with your child's name. Have them practice counting groups of 10 as they put the objects into the jar. Healthy Eating Our students enjoyed taking part in our Food Impact activity. They enjoyed learning about different kinds of foods and taking part in a variety of activities about nutritious foods. We are continuing to talk about making healthy choices and encouraging the children to eat their healthy snacks before they eat their treats. Some of our students have been expressing that they are hungry soon after arriving at school. Please remind your child/children to eat enough before they arrive as our snack time is 10-15 minutes and they only have time for a small snack. Please help teach your child how to open their snacks (containers, packages, bananas etc.) and provide cutlery when needed. If the container is difficult for them to open (e.g. fruit cups etc.) then consider putting it into another reusable container that they are confident opening and closing on their own. |
